What a relief!
On a recent visit to view the projects that Goal50 is currently involved with, the charity received a call from the Head Teacher of a pre-school facility in the township of Mitchells Plain. The government was threatening to close the school if it failed to review its toilet facilities. The work achieved in what was no more than a shipping container was phenomenal. Closure would be an absolute travesty. Despite the cramped working environment, the staff were incredibly enthusiastic and the work on display was nothing short of amazing. The interior walls of the container were drenched in educational stimuli.
However, to keep the school in existence required swift action and resource. The 30 children were currently using the toilet at the home of the Head Teacher – a stroll across a quiet road - but deemed unsafe. Funds for the building of the toilet block were found in no time at all. Goal50 is grateful for the kind donation.
Mitchells Plain was created by the apartheid government in the early 1970s as a Coloured township for middle-income families.
Approximately 300,000 people were forcefully removed from their homes in Cape Town. In the 90s, areas deteriorated into urban ghettos. Drug abuse and gangs took control, resulting in violent protests and riots.
But it’s the amazing work that is going on today under huge pressures that we choose to celebrate. To a class of nearly 30 children who receive little or no state support, pre-school is a shipping container. We applaud the commitment of the Head Teacher and his staff.
